NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island State Police DUI Task Force said it is stepping up to ensure the safety of drivers during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Wednesday morning, a press conference was held at North Kingstown Beach to announce their plans to protect the community on the roads
Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and is also one of the most dangerous.
According to the National Highway Safety Administration, 40% of all traffic fatalities during Thanksgiving weekend involve drunk driving.
The night before Thanksgiving, commonly called “Blackout Wednesday” or “Drinksgiving,” earned its name because of the increase in heavy drinking, particularly among young adults returning home for the holiday.
“It’s also known as Drinksgiving and it got those nicknames from not a good way,” Catherine Andrew said. “I can tell you that after a destructive choice, I lost my co-pilot who I would go food shopping with.”
The Rhode Island DUI Task Force said it will take proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies, including increased patrols.
“The DUI Task Force, between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. on ‘Blackout Wednesday,’ arrested 32 people in the state of Rhode Island who got behind the wheel and made the wrong decision,” Lt. Donald Barrington said.
Officials said the initiative isn’t just about enforcement, it’s about prevention, and are urging everyone to speak up and help keep loved ones safe.
“Today we’re reaching out to family and friends and individuals that conduct themselves in an unsafe way,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti said. “Please intercede out of love for them.”
The task force added that those who will be traveling during the holiday season should take steps to remain safe, including planning ahead, designating a sober driver, and reporting suspected impaired drivers.
