WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Firefighters responding to a box alarm at a Village Road address Tuesday at 8:52 a.m. were confronted by a man wielding an unusual weapon, according to Woonsocket police.
An arriving firefighter encountered building resident Luis Martinez Villegas, 52, who was allegedly holding a baseball bat with three knives taped to the end.
The firefighter ran from the building to warn other firefighters, saying that Villegas was holding the bat in a threatening manner.
Villegas followed the firefighter outside with the bat, and a Woonsocket police officer on the scene drew his service weapon and ordered Villegas to drop the weapon.
Villegas complied with the order and was detained by officers.
Fire department personnel determined the cause of smoke inside Villegas’ apartment appeared to be the alleged intentional burning of paper material on the stove’s burners.
Villegas was charged with first degree arson and felony assault and arraigned and held without bail on Tuesday.
He will next appear in court on December 10.
