Group giving free holiday meals to Lexington community

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — This Saturday, a group of Kentuckians are set to cook and serve over a thousand free meals at The Wok, a restaurant off Waller Avenue.
Organizers Zach and Heather Smith say the event, which started small a few years ago, has grown significantly.
“We plated like 80 plates of food and delivered them out,” Heather said. “It’s probably one of the most incredible experiences of my life.”
Partnering with The Wok, the event now distributes meals to multiple locations across Lexington. Restaurant owner Hoang Duong recalled how the partnership began.
“They approached me just asking for some advice,” he said. “You know, it was going to be from their home, and I was like, ‘you know what, why don’t we do it at the restaurant,'” said Duong.
Organizers say anyone in need of a meal can stop by The Wok this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“The holidays are great for those who that are doing well,” Zach Smith said. “But for people that are less fortunate, this is a really tough time and this is the best time to reach out and give back to those in need,” said Zach Smith.
“Spending a little time giving back to the community doesn’t cost anything,” said Heather Smith. “When you see the looks on these people’s faces and the thank you’s that you get, you want to come back and do it. You can ask any volunteer that’s here on Saturday, they’ll tell you that’s why they’ve been doing it over and over the last couple years,” said Heather Smith.
