Dry and Mild for Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade
Today will be dry and mild with highs topping out in the low 60s. High clouds will gradually increase throughout the day as strong cold front begins to organize to the west. The Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve parade will be cool and cloudy with temperatures in the low to mid 50s.
Isolated Thanksgiving Severe Threat
Rain will begin overnight and spread east through the morning. Expect widespread morning rain for anyone traveling locally, but a few storms may intensify later in the afternoon. The storm prediciton center has highlighted a level 1 out of 5 severe threat Thursday for areas near and south and east of I-85. Strongest storms possible from 10am until 2 or 3pm. Temperatures will climb into the upper 60s to lower 70s ahead of the cold front. Strong winds aloft and modest instability will help organize and fuel storms. The biggest concern will be for damaging wind, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.The cold front will clear the area by the late afternoon with rain ending by the early evening.
Mountain Snow
Light snow will be possible for the mountains Thursday night through Friday morning with up to an inch accumulation for higher elevations like Beech and Sugar Mountain. This could make travel slick for anyone in the high country.
Arctic Plunge
Temperatures will plummet across the region with the coldest air of the season arriving just in time for Meteorological Winter. Highs on Friday will only reach the upper 30s in the mountains to low 50s across the Piedmont. Widespread freeze Friday night with temps falling into the 20s and 30s. Temperatures will struggle to break out of the 40s this weekend with even colder air arriving early next week.
