RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Intel in Rio Rancho is receiving half a billion dollars from the federal government for a massive expansion, bringing advanced technology, upgraded facilities, and more jobs to metro area
The $500 million comes from the CHIPS & Science Act. "The CHIPS Act is a critical component to keeping the chip manufacturing and these technologies right here in the United States; it's important," said Mayor Gregg Hull of Rio Rancho.

Intel said the award will support its plans to advance semiconductor manufacturing and other projects at its sites in Arizona, Ohio, Oregon, and New Mexico. Mayor Hull credited Intel as a contributor to the rapid growth of Rio Rancho, being established even before the birth of the city.
"We've watched them grow, and the city has grown. And every time they have grown, we've added more houses, we've added more stores, we've added more of the amenities that people want to see as the community grows," said Hull.
Intel explained the money will also go toward modernizing operations and opening more areas for manufacturing within the plant. Intel also stated the investment will add 700 manufacturing jobs, bringing the facility's total capacity to 1,800 jobs and 2,500 construction jobs.
"That helps us boost the economy; that helps us really grow the community, not just from jobs but housing opportunities to the economic opportunities to the small businesses," said Mayor Hull.
Earlier this year, Intel Rio Rancho expanded into advanced packaging technology, which is essentially multiple chips combined into one unit. They are used for electronics ranging from appliances to vehicles. This comes after Intel received $3 billion under the CHIPS Act back in September from the Department of Defense.
