RITBA warns of ‘unpaid toll’ text scam
Nov 26, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority warned customers Tuesday of fraudulent text messages that claim customers have unpaid tolls.
RITBA said customers have received texts that appear to be sent from the organization, claiming they have an unpaid toll from Kansas Road.
The messages contain false “urgent” warnings of late fees if the customer’s balances are not paid, as well as a link that leads to a fraudulent website.
RITBA says customers are advised to to visit its official E-ZPass website to check their balances and accounts.
“We urge customers to stay vigilant—if a message seems suspicious, it likely is a scam. We recommend using safe methods, such as visiting our official website, to check the status of your account,” RITBA Executive Director Lori Caron Silveira said.
Customers who have received suspicious texts are told to report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, or forward the message to 7726 to notify phone carriers.
