Indiana sees first flu death of the 202425 season
Nov 26, 2024
(WXIN/WTTV) — An Indiana has died from influenza, the first such death of the 2024-25 flu season.
Indiana Dept. of Health officials announced Tuesday that one person died this week from influenza, bringing the season's death total to one. The DOH's defined flu season began in October and will last until around May.
Despite this recorded influenza death, Indiana's Influenza-Like Illness dashboard is still at "low activity" overall. Throughout this week, Hoosiers have seen a little more than a 2% increase in flu-like symptoms and hospitalizations.
The first flu death of the season comes later than in 2023, when the Hoosier State saw at least two influenza-related deaths before Nov. 2.
Indiana's criteria for an influenza-like illness is a patient with a fever of over 100 degrees who is also experiencing a cough or sore throat. While symptoms can vary, the CDC says other symptoms include headache, fatigue, and body stiffness.
While anyone can get the flu, those at higher risk of flu-related complications, like pneumonia, hospitalization and death, include:
Pregnant women
Young children
People who are immunocompromised or who have chronic illness
Elderly people
IDOH Officials said no additional information about the patient will be released because of privacy laws. For more data regarding Indiana's 2024-25 flu season, click here.
