Monroe County sees staggering increase in overdose deaths
Nov 26, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County has seen another increase in the number of overdose deaths, according to a new report.
The Monroe County Department of Public Health reported that there have been 512 overdose deaths in 2023, a 26% increase since 2022. Part of this, the report says, involved a combination of different substances.
The substances combined included opioids, cocaine, and alcohol. Data shows that 72.9% of victims had at least two of those in their system and 23.6% had all three.
In terms of fentanyl, around 83% of opioid and cocaine overdose deaths had fentanyl or its analogs present. Alcohol was only present in around 31% of opioid and cocaine overdose deaths.
The report also outlines disparities in overdose deaths — 40% of Black residents made up these deaths, nearly three times as many males died than females, and overdoses among those over 60 were on the rise.
This report was released after the county received over $1 million to combat the opioid epidemic through the Overdose Fatality Review Board. Other steps the county has taken include community outreach programs, the installation of naloxone boxes, and multiple campaigns and hotlines.
