MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Venezuelan gangs have made news in Tennessee after the head of the TBI recently said members had been found in every city in the state. But so far, Memphis Police Interim Chief C.J. Davis told City Council on Tuesday, there has been little sign of the gangs locally. David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said two weeks ago that a Venezuelan gang named “Tren de Aragua” has been spotted in metropolitan areas across the Volunteer State. TBI reported a gang member was arrested Monday in the Chattanooga area. “They are very violent. This is a group that was created in the prisons in Venezuela and they are here and they are in numbers here,” explained Rausch. She said she was aware of two "incidents," though she hesitated to use the word incident to describe them. Davis said that a Venezuelan person was arrested by ICE in Memphis, but was not associated with gang activity in the city. Sometime last year, MPD found Venezuelan gang-type graffiti in the Appling Farms area, she said. "But as far as identifying any real activity ... we haven't seen anything that would cause any concern about Venezuelan gangs," Davis said. "We'll keep our eye on it, because we work really closely with TBI." Some are national — Crips, Bloods, Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples — but most are local "subset gangs."
