HONOLULU (KHON2) -- This year's holiday travel season is poised to break records with thousands of travelers heading to the airports over the next few days. If you're planning to fly this Thanksgiving, here's what you need to know. If there's one travel tip that can't be emphasized enough, it's plan to be early. Elmer and Stacy Esmerelda, who are traveling to Sacramento to visit their son who's away at college, followed this exact advice. How to avoid spending all day in the kitchen this Thanksgiving "We wanted to get out of here soon and give us plenty of time to relax before the holidays," they said. All of the state's airports are expected to be extra busy this week. The State Department of Transportation recommends traveling around the peak hours at the airport, which is between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Travelers should also plan to arrive two hours before mainland or international flights and 90 minutes early for interisland flights. "Local people should plan accordingly and call their airline, first of all, to ensure that their flights are on schedule for the kamaaina coming to the airports. If they plan to park, do plan accordingly," advised Curt Otagury, DOT Airport Deputy Director. Dot said the airport lots are already filling up, particularly at Lihue and Hilo and the new parking rate is $25. "If you can get dropped off whether that be taxi, ride share or your relative who's not traveling with you, we would highly advise that," said Shelly Kunishige, HDOT spokesperson. Dot said CLEAR is available at the airports and TSA is bracing for the influx of travelers and reminding travelers of the rules. Holiday treats such as jams or gravy count as liquids, so pack those in checked luggage. As for that pie? It's okay to bring it on board, as long as it doesn't have a liquid filling that exceeds the 3.4-ounce limit. A travel tip from the Esmerelda's is to pack light. Dot said their ongoing renovation projects shouldn't impact travelers and plan on arriving early to enjoy the amenities at the airports.
