Historical tombstone returned to Oleika Shriners Temple

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A historical tombstone stolen from the Oleika Shriners Temple has been returned after being missing for over a month.
According to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers, the tombstone disappeared from the temple’s property last month, leaving an empty space where it once stood. The temple said the item had been returned on Sunday. Jeff Coleman, a volunteer with the temple, said the tombstone reappeared on their front porch.
“One of our volunteers noticed the tombstone out here on our front porch area,” he said. “Whoever the guilty party was obviously had a guilty conscience and brought it back to us,” said Coleman.
When Coleman first spoke with WTVQ he asked the person responsible to leave the item on the front porch, days after the story aired, it returned.
“The Crime Stoppers and WTVQ running our story got the word out, that’s what you have to do nowadays,” said Coleman.
While expressing relief, Coleman also had a message for the person responsible.
“Thank you very much, we wanted it back and we got it back,” he said, “We’re not interested in putting anybody in jail, we got our property back, in the end that’s all we wanted,” said Coleman.
The temple is now working to clean the tombstone and ensure it is better secured.
