Save the Bay accuses CRMC of power abuse for canceling controversial seawall meetings
Nov 25, 2024
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Save the Bay executive director Topher Hamblett is accusing the Coastal Resources Management Council of intentionally delaying a key meeting that could determine the fate of a controversial seawall in North Kingstown.
The Quidnessett Country Club said it built the the 600-foot rock wall in December 2022 to protect its property from further erosion.
But both Save the Bay and the Attorney General Peter Neronha argue that the club built it illegally and without the permission of the regulatory board.
Now, the club is asking the council to change the property's water type so they can keep the wall.
"This is one of the classic 'don't seek permission, ask for forgiveness later' situations," Hamblett said. "The council should not be engaged in that kind of action."

For the last two months the Planning and Procedures Subcommittee has canceled its meetings to discuss the Quidnessett seawall.
In an email to Target 12, a spokesperson for the council said this Tuesday's meeting was canceled for scheduling reasons, but Hamblett said delaying the decision is causing further harm on the coast.
On Monday, Hamblett sent a letter to the CRMC accusing the regulatory board of "political favoritism and abuse of power."
He argued the council's staff of experts recommended the club's petition to change the water type should be denied in September.
Yet Janice Mathews, the vice president of Jan Companies, said in September the country club has spent millions combatting erosion in ways the CRMC suggested, but none of them worked.
"The last 30 years we’ve lost over 47 feet," Mathews said. "Every time we lose more, we have to move the 14th fairway to the point where we can’t move it anywhere else."
