Support local families: Benedictine Military School and Second Harvest host annual food drive
Nov 25, 2024
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The holidays are just around the corner, and Second Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the Benedictine Military School for a big food drive.
It's one of the largest in the area, and they are working hard to make sure families in need have enough to eat this winter.
For over a month, the Benedictine Military School (BC) has been collecting food for Second Harvest. It is a part of their annual food drive, a partnership that has spanned more than 20 years.
With the school's help, the food bank is hoping to provide enough meals for the community throughout this winter.

BC Cadets aim to collect 20,000 cans and donations this year, to beat their previous record of over 15,000.
This food drive plays a critical role at Second Harvest, ensuring the shelves stay stocked during their busiest time of the year. These donations help Second Harvest provide to children and families in need across the Coastal Empire.
Second Harvest says November is their busiest month, giving away more than 2 million pounds of donations. The food bank is also providing 4,000 turkeys to families in need this Thanksgiving.
"For many of them, it means they can have a Thanksgiving dinner," said Mary Jane Crouch, the executive director of Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. "A lot of people struggle and there are a lot of people struggling after the storms, and as well as before the storms they were struggling. They had to throw away a lot of food. So being able to recoup that food means that a lot of them are going be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner... It gives them the chance to do things that they might not otherwise be able to do."
"I believe all the things that we are doing here at Second Harvest and at BC is making a great contribution not just to Savannah, but the surrounding areas and those who can’t receive food on the table," said Julian Watson, a senior at Benedictine who is helping lead the food drive this year.
Cadets will be collecting donations through neighborhoods such as Ardsley Park and Isle of Hope this week.
Students began passing out bags for donations this past Saturday and will be collecting them at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. They hope to receive them full of donated cans by the end of this week.
