A forming sinkhole prompted the closure of a street near the border of Oceanside and Vista Sunday afternoon, and officials said the closure would last for at least a day. Melrose Drive is closed at Cannon Road near the border of Oceanside and Vista because of a forming sinkhole, authorities said. The closure, which affects northbound and southbound Melrose, will last for 24 hours, according to an alert posted by the Oceanside Police Department on X. Both county sheriff’s and Oceanside police are dealing with the problem because the location of the forming sinkhole is near the border of the two North County cities, said Oceanside police Lt. Ryan Erwin. The sinkhole is located in Vista but access to it is from Oceanside, Erwin said. Public works employees from Oceanside were setting up warning signs, he said. Sheriff’s Lt. David Chandroo said that a deputy sheriff from Vista asked Oceanside police for assistance after he became aware of the sinkhole.
