TOPEKA (KSNT) - Are you wanting to feed your furry friends some of your Thanksgiving food this holiday? If so, you may want to think twice. From small scraps of turkey to a piece of pumpkin pie, it's important to know what is safe and not safe for your pets to eat. KSNT 27 News spoke to Dr. Amy Guernsey-Youngblood, a veterinarian at University Veterinary Care Center, who said even the tiniest bit of Thanksgiving food can cause some major health issues for animals. "The fattier the food I feel like the worse it is," Guernsey-Youngblood said. "It can really wreak havoc on their GI system, giving them vomiting, diarrhea, and in worse case scenarios pancreatitis, truly, and that can be a life-threatening situation. Sesame Street Live coming to Topeka It's not only heavily fat concentrated foods that are bad for your pets. Any and all bones are strongly discouraged. "Also fractured teeth. We see a lot of that as well," Guernsey-Youngblood said. "People think, you know, I'm just going to give them this bone to chew on and then they come in here because they've broken a really important tooth in their mouth." A small piece of white turkey meat may not cause exceptional harm for animals, but they should stay away from specifically the turkey skin, and any gravy or casserole dishes.
