ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — It's officially Turkey Week! — which is known to be one of the biggest weeks for retailers and local grocery stores. As that Thursday meal approaches, it often comes with a hefty price tag for shoppers. So, those selling supplies for the perfect meal are also offering discounts to help customers. Gates Big M supermarket in North Gates has been preparing for the increased demand during Thanksgiving week by stocking shelves and readying the baking and meat department. According to CBS News, the cost of Thanksgiving dinner for 2024 is down two percent from 2023 but is still significantly higher than they were five years ago. Gates Big M Co-owner Greg Newman told News 8 his store's sale prices remain competitive with last year, and many stores are offering discounted or free turkeys with a qualifying purchase. At Gates Big M, customers get a free frozen 20 lb. turkey when they spend $100, something Newman said is to help keeps costs for customers manageable. "They really appreciate it because, you know, they're spending money on the sides and, you know, all the other stuff that goes with the meal. It's kind of hard to do, especially when you're cooking a big dinner for everybody to get their $100 purchase," Newman said. "So, it's just kind of no brainer to come and get your free turkeys while you're buying everything else. I would say if you are buying a frozen turkey, you better have a bought already and start thawing it because you don't want to do it dangerously." Many deals run right up until Thanksgiving Day. Gates Big M will be open until 1 p.m. Thursday, so there will be plenty of time to grab that last minute ingredient.
