Nov 23, 2024
PRINCETON — The Princeton University football team ended a disappointing season on a winning note.
Caden Wright scooped up a fumble and returned it six yards for the winning touchdown in the third quarter as the Tigers finished with a 20-17 victory over Penn on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 17-13 in the third quarter, AJ Pigford sacked Quakers quarterback Liam O’Brien, jarring the ball loose in the process. Wright picked it up and took it the six yards required for the touchdown.
John Volker ran for 130 yards and a touchdown and Jeffrey Sexton kicked a pair of field goals for Princeton (3-7, 2-5), which snapped a four-game losing skid.
Blaine Hipa completed 17-of-31 passes for 167 yards and was intercepted twice.
O’Brien threw a 6-yard touchdown to Bisi Owens with 16 seconds left in the second quarter to give Penn a 17-10 lead.
O’Brien was 15-of-30 for 168 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Malachi Hosley gained 122 yards on 18 carries for the Quakers (4-6, 2-6).
Both teams were playing out the string in a dead rubber while the other three Ivy games all had title implications. A win by Yale over Harvard in ‘The Game’ opened the door for Dartmouth and Columbia to make it a three-way share of the league title.
The Ivy champion does not participate in the FCS playoffs.
