Cavs reenergized to face Raptors after threeday break
Nov 23, 2024
The Cavaliers will be a well-rested basketball team when they host the Raptors on Nov. 24 after enjoying three consecutive days off for the first time this season. They won’t get a similar break until late December, when they host the Jazz on Dec. 23 and then don’t play again until Dec. 27 when they meet the Nuggets in Denver.
“The physical rest obviously is super important, but the mental getaway is going to be huge,” Coach Kenny Atkinson said before the respite began Nov. 21. “Seventeen games in 29 days is a lot.
“But I told the guys, ‘You start out 16-1, it’s something you’ll look back on the rest of your lives. I’m really happy for the guys.”
Atkinson gave his players Nov. 21 and 22 off. They returned to practice Nov. 23 in preparation for the game with Toronto.
The break came at an ideal time because Darius Garland (groin), Isaac Okoro (ankle), Caris LeVert (knee), Dean Wade (ankle) and Max Strus (ankle) all missed the game with the Pelicans on Nov. 20 with their various injuries. Garland was the only one among the five who played against the Celtics in Boston on Nov. 19, and he had a night to forget, hitting on just 3 of 21 shots from the field in a 120-117 loss.
None of the injuries is expected to be serious, but Atkinson has his eye on the playoffs in the second half of April plus May and June. He is very conscious about not wearing his players out. Plus, the bench players had the chance to shine in a 128-100 romp over the Pelicans. Atkinson won’t hesitate to go to his bench again if the injured players aren’t ready to face the 4-12 Raptors.
“Credit to our development coaching group because they work with the guys to keep them ready,” Atkinson said. “Great credit to our performance team that keeps them ready physically. It’s tough. You’re not playing, you’re not playing and then all of a sudden you’re thrown in and you’re playing 37 minutes.”
Atkinson was referring to rookie Jaylon Tyson. Tyson scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out seven assists in 37 minutes against the Pelicans. He might get his second career start in the game with the Raptors if Okoro and Wade are still hobbled.
