Police: Florida man assaulted woman at Seekonk motel

SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman at a Seekonk motel early Friday morning, according to police.
Officers responded to the Motel 6 on Fall River Avenue around 1:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 hang-up call. Upon arrival, police located a woman in one of the hallways who claimed she had been assaulted by a man armed with a gun.
Police told 12 News the suspect pointed the gun at the victim's head while strangling her, but she was not seriously injured.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Corey L. Soares of Punta Gorda, Florida, fled the motel when officers arrived.

During their investigation, police searched the motel room and found a loaded firearm.
Later that afternoon, around 2 p.m., officers spotted Soares entering a Panera Bread on Highland Avenue. Police said officers engaged Soares inside the restaurant and confirmed it was him before taking him into custody.
Soares is facing several charges, including the following:

Assault with a dangerous weapon
Domestic assault and battery
Domestic strangulation or suffocation
Possession of a large-capacity firearm
Assault to murder, firearm-armed
Firearm violation with three prior violent or drug-related crimes
Possession of ammunition without an FID card
Police said Soares drove away in a green 2001 Ford F150 bearing a Florida plate #33EKYT. The truck has not yet been found, according to police, and anyone with information regarding the location is urged to contact the department at (508) 336-8123.
