TOPEKA (KSNT) - A Topeka homeless shelter is celebrating the completion of two years of renovation work. The Topeka Rescue Mission's (TRM) Hope Center takes in women and children who are without housing. The recently completed renovation work at the Hope Center, marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 21, aims to create a more supportive environment for people who have experienced trauma in their lives. Completed renovation work includes new color choices in rooms, new furniture and better lighting. This is to help increase feelings of safety and comfort for those who use the Hope Center. "When we know that some of our color choices and everything were that of made people feel almost like going into a hospital or basically maybe triggers from jail time and things like that, we wanted our shelter to be just more sensitive of that," said La Manda Broyles, TRM executive director. ‘It’s all for sale’: Brew Bank sells off merchandise after shutting down in downtown Topeka The Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka (FHLBank) which spearheaded the renovation work, received special recognition from the TRM for their help. "For more than 30 years, FHLBank Topeka employees have come together to support a local nonprofit through our Community Affairs Committee in support of our housing mission," said Jeff Kuzbel, FHLBank Topeka president and CEO. "The Topeka Rescue Mission is an essential resource for our community and was the perfect partner for the last two years. I have enjoyed painting alongside our business partners at the past few workdays, and I commend TRM on the important work they do every day to improve lives.” The Hope Center is staffed 24/7 and 365 days a year for women, children and families. It can be found at 116 Northwest Curtis in north Topeka. You can call the Hope Center at 785-354-1744 with ext. 309. For more local news, click here.
