WINCHESTER, Va. (DC News Now) -- The Shenandoah Valley region has found an innovative way to deliver health care in communities where there is a shortage of medical professionals.
A partnership with Frederick County, Virginia public schools and the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation is making scholarships for pharmaceutical technician training a huge success.
Lily Dodson, a senior at James Wood High School, is immersed in a rewarding learning experience through the school's Dowell J. Howard Pharmacy Technician Academy.
She said she likes that "you're filing prescriptions, you're getting to work one-on-one with patients who go to the doctor, pick up their prescriptions and go home. So it's nice to have a good impact on somebody's day."
Tisha Hicks leads the pharmacy technician program for Frederick County schools.
"There is a great need for these technicians. But, the truth is, anything in the medical field, this class can be a basis for," she said.

George Hummer, the superintendent for Frederick County Public Schools, takes pride in the program.
"It's a way for students to not only learn about different skills and put those skills to work toward application, but it actually provides a way for them to give back," he explained.
The program would not be possible without scholarships from the Claude Moore Foundation, a charitable trust that has donated more than $20 million for career and technical education in the region.
Ben Thompson sees that investment pays off with training that gives students real-life experience by the time they graduate.
"We work with the Claude Moore Foundation to make these programs become a reality for our kids," said Thompson.
The Claude Moore Foundation is thrilled with the success of the program.
"This is all about extending opportunities," said Shirley Bazdar, with the foundation, on a visit to the pharmaceutical lab at James Wood High School's Dowell J. Howard Career and Technical Center. "This is what the Claude Moore scholars program is all about."
While the national certification rate for graduates of pharmaceutical technical training is 69%, the rate for graduates of the Claude Moore Foundation-funded program in Frederick County, Virginia, is a perfect 100%!
