Central Indiana woke up to a winter wonderland for the first time this season! While it was relatively light snow, most spots received at or just under an inch of snow mainly on the grass. Now as we head into the evening commute, heavier snow bands could produce heavy, wet slushy accumulations before the night is done. Visibility levels are reduced but it's still taking a while for snow to stick on the roads, minus bridges/overpasses. As of this writing, Indianapolis beat the record snowfall for the day. Through 4:00 PM, Indianapolis had 2.5" of rain. Breaking the 1.3" set in 2015. With additional snow this evening we could top 3" officially for the city and mark the LARGEST November snow since 1997. Snow Depth Map from November 21, 2015 (Courtesy: NOAA) Expect this second round to be through the evening, getting out between 8-10 PM. An additional inch or isolated two inches is possible before this ends. Winter Weather Advisory is in place through 10:00 PM. Additionally, Thursday is the coldest day since February. Our high of 39° was at Midnight and the mercury failed to reach those levels this afternoon. This morning, we dipped to 29° at the Indy airport, marking the first freeze of the season. This is almost a month overdue. It's also the latest first freeze in 122 years and the second latest on record. Wind chills this morning were in the teens for several spots, giving Central Indiana a wake up call for winter. Indy had a low wind chill of 15° during the morning commute. Once this is done, temperatures will slowly warm again into the 50s for the weekend before our eyes turn to another cool down and more rain/snow chances toward Thanksgiving.
