Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Gregory Jones told 22News that assistance was requested at around 8 a.m. at the Elm Street Crossing in Deerfield for a report of a pedestrian struck and killed by a train.
An Amtrak spokesperson said Valley Flyer Train 471 was traveling from Greenfield to New Haven when it struck a person trespassing on the tracks just south of Greenfield. Amtrak issued a reminder about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.
"According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, and railroad crossing incidents are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in America. These incidents can affect everyone involved—those who are injured or die and their families, our train crews, and our passengers," in a statement from Amtrak.
