CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - An injured turtle found on the side of a western Massachusetts road nearly two months ago is recovering.
Massachusetts Environmental Police said that one of their officers was on their way to a meeting on September 27th when they drove by a turtle on the side of a road that didn't appear to be a typical painted turtle or snapping turtle.

The officer turned around and found it to be an injured eastern box turtle. It was taken to Berkshire County Turtle Rescue Inc. to recover from its injuries.
MassWildlife biologists determined that the turtle's location was not near an established area for this species. The turtle will be released in the spring in a suitable location.
There are 10 species of turtles in Massachusetts and six of them are on the Endangered Species List. Two endangered species in western Massachusetts are the eastern box turtle and the wood turtle. It is illegal to catch or kill any endangered species in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
