CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — Friends and fellow spoken word artists gathered to honor Erica Holton at an open mic night Wednesday.
Holton is one of three people Cary Police found shot and killed inside a home Monday. She was a staple of the spoken word community for over 10 years.
City Soul Cafe Co-Founder Joseph Churchwell, also known as Church Da'Poet, began the open mic night with a moment of silence and played a recording of one of Holton's spoken word poems.
"She's always been just a bright spot for us," Churchwell said. "If we were going through something, she was easy to talk to. She was a hug, she was an answer when you didn't have one, a mother figure when you didn't have a mother figure.

Spoken Word Artist Nakita Jay Poet said Holton was like a sister to her.
"Her heart was so big," Jay said. "She had so much love. "That's why when every person came through that door, they felt that love. As a community, we're really gonna have a void.
"I think what makes it so hard is not being able to see her face and see her smile, but also not even understanding what happened," she said.
People also signed a card to give to Holton's family at a tribute next month.
Cary police said they are waiting for autopsy results to learn more about what happened.
