NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – More teachers are now getting help paying down their student loans thanks to the state's Teacher Loan Repayment Program. This year, the New Mexico Higher Education Department increased the number of teachers receiving loan forgiveness, awarding funding to 537 new applicants and renewing funding for 357 applicants. Through the program, licensed New Mexico teachers can get up to $6,000 per year for two years to go toward outstanding federal student loan debt and interest. Since 2020, the program has helped 2,533 New Mexico teachers pay down their debt. Valencia County begins construction of new hospital in Los Lunas “The Teacher Loan Repayment Program is a vital investment in our educators and their future,” said Public Education Secretary-Designate Mariana Padilla. “By alleviating the burden of student loan debt, we are showing our hardworking teachers that we value their dedication to New Mexico's students and communities. This program not only supports our educators but also strengthens the foundation of our schools and helps build a brighter future for our state."
