Petitioners ask D20 to "bring back snow days"
Nov 20, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A petition on Change.org is asking Academy School District 20 (D20) to return to traditional snow days rather than e-learning days, and has garnered over 2,000 signatures.
The petition, which as of Wednesday, Nov. 20, had 2,109 signatures, implores D20 to revert from e-learning days to the "beloved American tradition" of having a day off when snow prevents students and faculty from attending school in person.
The petition asks that the first six snow days of the year, which the petition says are built in to the D20 calendar, be made into traditional snow days and "allow kids to be kids on these days." The petition said any snow days after those first six could then be e-learning days.
The petition also asks that the district close if the Air Force Academy closes for inclement weather. The petition argued that when the base closes but the district does not, it puts a strain on Air Force Academy staffing at the gates.
"If conditions on base are not safe for the military to report, D20 should trust their judgement," the petition argues.
D20 responded to FOX21 News' request for comment, and said the yearly calendars are approved by the Board of Education with a flexible end date and two traditional snow days built in.
"The use of e-learning after two traditional snow days allows the district to predict the last day of school sooner, as using traditional snow days during all inclement weather events would extend the school year," D20 said. "Currently, after two traditional snow days, staff work remotely, and secondary students participate in synchronous e-learning. We are committed to regularly reviewing feedback and adapting to meet the needs of our students, staff, and community."
