NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — With President-Elect Donald Trump set to begin his second term in office in January, the United States is almost guaranteed to have a new president next term, and people are already looking ahead to the 2028 election. A study conducted by Bet Online looked at geotagged X data from the day after the election to try and see who people want to run for president in 2028. Graphic courtesy of Bet Online. After tracking more than 250,000 tweets with hashtags like #Vance2028, #Obama2028, and #Newsom2028, the study found that Vice President-Elect JD Vance leads the way with 26 states picking him at this point. Coming in as the VP Elect at only 40 years old after the Republican party secured the White House and both branches of Congress, Vance is in prime position to potentially be the next in line after Trump. JD Vance: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming (229 electoral votes) Your Local Election Headquarters: Election Results Former First Lady Michelle Obama, who picked up 11 states, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, the favorite in eight, split a majority of the Democratic states, suggesting the party is divided at the moment about who they're going to rally behind. Michelle Obama: Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington (103 electoral votes) Gavin Newsom: California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont (133 electoral votes) Also picking up some states are Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Tulsi Gabbard, who was nominated by Trump to be the Director of National Intelligence. Josh Shapiro: Delaware, Pennsylvania (22 electoral votes) Ron DeSantis: Florida (30 electoral votes) Gretchen Whitmer: Michigan (15 electoral votes) Tulsi Gabbard: Alaska (3 electoral votes) Of the swing states, Vance took Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. Shapiro took Pennsylvania, Obama took Georgia, and Whitmer took Michigan. A lot can change in the years leading up to the election, as proven this year with all the swing states voting for Trump. The way his second term goes will have a large influence on Vance's chances of succeeding him in office, and could possibly open the door for someone else looking to run.
