The department says it welcomed more than two million visitors to its sites and museums, while serving 685,000 children with its educational programs. The department is now asking for a 10% budget increase in the next fiscal year. Lawmakers voiced their support, stressing how important the agency's work is to preserving state culture.
The Department of Cultural Affair's proposal also askes for $16.5 in non-recurring funds. That includes $10 million for rural libraries and $1 million for marketing. $5 million would be to ensure compliance with federal laws requiring Native American remains and artifacts to be returned to their tribes.
