South Dakota plane flight logs: May 31 to Nov. 6
Nov 20, 2024
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Nearly 100 different people flew on the pair of Department of Transportation-managed South Dakota state planes between May 31 and Nov. 6.
The big plan for Falls Park
In all, 99 different individuals have flown on the two planes in this time period.
20 people flew on the state's King Air 90 (KA90).
86 people flew on the King Air 350 (KA350).
Some individuals flew on both planes in this period.
Together, the planes took 42 flights, eight by the KA90 and 34 by the KA350.
In contrast to previous inspections of flight logs, this more than five-month period has been rather uneventful, with a relatively low number of flights and just three out-of-state, all to Sioux City, Iowa.
KELOLAND News has been requesting state records on plane flights for the past few years and plans to continue the practice. These records are compiled by the DOT and are reviewed periodically by KELOLAND News.

KELOLAND News also specifically reviewed Gov. Kristi Noem's use of the state plane during a state emergency in June.
On June 21, amidst catastrophic flooding in South Dakota, Governor Kristi Noem posted a video about the situation, telling viewers she was in the eastern half of the state. The next day -- June 22 -- she was in Washington D.C., speaking at an event for religious conservatives.
The next morning, now June 23, she was still in D.C., appearing on Meet the Press before popping up again a few hours later in Dakota Dunes to hold a briefing on the flooding.
Just hours later, still on June 23, Noem was in Tennessee, speaking at a Lincoln Day dinner fundraiser.
In total, Noem flew more than 1,500 miles on June 23 while dealing with the McCook Lake flooding situation. More than 100 homes were damaged with the flooding at McCook Lake and 26 houses were total losses.
The next day, on June 24, Noem was again in North Sioux City, this time with Republican Rep. Dusty Johnson. On this day, Johnson flew on the state plane from Pierre to Sioux Falls and back, the only passenger on the King Air 350.

On June 25, Noem appeared to have made her way back to Pierre, as she appears on the state plane logs that day, flying from Pierre to Sioux Falls, Yankton, and back to Pierre.
This was Noem's first appearance on the logs since June 12, when she flew from Pierre to Huron and back.
During this span of days from June 21-25, while parts of South Dakota were flooding, Noem made appearances -- some of which were official business, and others which were not -- in an unnamed portion of eastern South Dakota, Washington D.C., Dakota Dunes, Tennessee, North Sioux City and then returned to Pierre.
Noem also defended her decision not to activate the National Guard to respond to the flood cleanup.
Throughout Noem's time in office, her use of the state planes has been the subject of ethical concerns which included a probe into her use of them, which ultimately did not result in charges. Noem has also garnered criticism during her term for her frequent trips and time spent out of state.
KELOLAND News reached out to the Governor's Office on Nov. 20, asking about her transportation on these trips.
Noem was recently announced as incoming President Donald Trump's pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security.
Previous state plane coverage
In early June, KELOLAND News published the state flights between March 13 and May 30.
Of these 33 flights, 17 were by the King Air 350, and 16 were by the King Air 90.
During this time frame, Noem flew nine times on the King Air 350. She did not fly on the King Air 90. Noem’s nine flights were mostly in-state, with the exception of flights to Washington and Texas when she testified before the U.S. House Ag Committee and visited the U.S.-Mexico border, respectively.
