Albuquerque city councilors list what projects they want funding for from the state

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Each Albuquerque city councilor has listed projects they would like the state to fund. They also listed crime-fighting initiatives they would like lawmakers to consider. Councilors would like lawmakers to get tough on crime with Councilor Louie Sanchez asking for a three-strikes law for violent offenders. That ask includes that violent felons would get life in prison after their third offense.

Councilor Renee Grout would like enhanced penalties for violent felonies committed by minors. Both are asking lawmakers to change the law that determines competency and increase penalties for felons in possession of a gun. Councilor Dan Champine would like more money for all-terrain firefighting vehicles.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller also released his legislative priorities which include a slew of crime-fighting proposals. He's asking for stricter penalties for gun crimes and closing the revolving doors in courts. This includes improved addiction programs with a strong focus on fentanyl.
Each councilor has also listed capital outlay projects in their district. They include improving Ladera Golf Course and adding pickleball courts there, plus making improvements to Route 66 for the upcoming 100th celebration.
Councilor Brook Bassan is asking for money for the North Domingo Baca Aquatic Center.
The final approval of the priorities was deferred to the next council meeting.
