Albuquerque man claims he was almost run over due to faulty crosswalk

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A pedestrian is speaking out after he said he was almost killed while using a dangerous crosswalk. The City of Albuquerque however said the crosswalk shouldn't have been used in the first place. Adelious Stith said he has been fighting the city for seven years to put a crosswalk on Americas Parkway near the new Markana Uptown Apartments. He said he was almost run over on November 4.
Photos taken on Monday show the crosswalk blocked off with signs and black trash bags covering the lights and buttons. Stith claims that in April, the crosswalk was fully functional and showed KRQE News 13 pictures where it was not blocked off. "When the lighting system was first functional I pushed the button because I was ecstatic that someone had been listening and paying attention to this public safety risk....I would hate to think that someone has to get hurt or killed… especially being that pedestrian death in this city is very high… so I hope it would not take that in order to get this system up and running," said Stith.
KRQE News 13 reached out to the City of Albuquerque for comment:
The crosswalk was just installed and has not been turned on yet. The lights are being completed and should be operational in the next week. While the lights are under construction, pedestrians should use extreme caution crossing the street and use the signal at Indian School and drivers should always yield to pedestrians in a marked crossing.
