PC Men’s Soccer Draws Bucknell In NCAA Tournament, Host Bison Thursday In First Round Matchup

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The No. 25 Providence College men’s soccer team earned an at-large selection to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. The Friars will host Bucknell in the First Round on Thursday, Nov. 21 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Thursday’s match will mark the first meeting all-time between the two soccer programs.
The Friars are making their 12th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament, and sixth appearance under the direction of 13th-year Head Coach Craig Stewart. The Friars’ most recent appearance in the NCAAs was in 2021. Providence earned victories over Marist (2-0) in the First Round and went on to defeat No. 14 Marshall (2-1 OT) in the Second Round, before losing to No. 3 Georgetown (1-4) in the Third Round.
In their previous 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, Providence has advanced to the Round of 16 four times (2014, 2016, 2019 & 2021) in addition to two Quarterfinal appearances (2014, 2016). The Friars’ most notable run in the NCAAs came during the 2014 campaign, when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal.
Providence College is 13-11-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament action, including a 10-5-1 mark with Stewart at the helm.
The Friars enter the NCAA Tournament with a 12-5-3 overall record. Providence claimed a share of the BIG EAST East Division Regular-Season title after compiling a 5-1-2 mark in conference play. The second-seeded Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the seventh time in program history on Nov. 17. The Friars fell to No. 24-ranked and fourth-seeded Georgetown, 2-1, at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
Bucknell enters the NCAA Tournament with a 7-6-6 overall record. The Bison won the Patriot League Conference Championship as the No. 2 seed over fourth-seeded Colgate University, 3-0, on Nov. 16. It marked Bucknell’s fifth Patriot League title in school history and the first since 2014.
The winner of Thursday’s NCAA First Round match-up will advance to the Second Round against seventh-ranked and ninth-seeded Clemson, in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers has won two of the last three NCAA College Cups.
