ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) is investigating an officer-involved shooting with the Roswell Police Department (RPD).
RPD said 911 was contacted by a child around 7:30 a.m., and it led them to believe the child's father had a gun.
RPD officers responded to the home on Oak Drive and encountered Timothy Riley, 30, who reportedly got into a vehicle in the driveway. Officers said they could also see children in the vehicle.

Authorities told Riley to show his hands, but he allegedly fired one, or more, gunshots at officers through the back window of the vehicle. RPD reported Riley left the vehicle with the gun and ignored their commands. One officer fired shots, but it is unclear if any of these hit Riley. Another shot was heard, and Riley fell to the ground. He was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to his head and pronounced dead.
No officers were reported to be injured in this incident.
However, while responding, one officer crashed into the Belmont Motel building due to hydroplaning. The vehicle started on fire while the officer was trapped inside. RPD and Roswell Fire Department were able to help that officer out of the vehicle and treat them for injuries.
