People in Louisiana who owe OMV fees can get financial relief

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Over 350,000 residents in Louisiana who have outstanding unpaid fines with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles can get financial relief after a law passed earlier this year.
Act 629, signed into law by Gov. Jeff Landry during the 2024 regular session, aims to help people get out of debt after an overhaul of the OMV's delinquent debt procedures.
"This law reflects our commitment to fairness in governance. By reforming the OMV’s reinstatement program, we are providing essential relief to our residents and getting more drivers back on the road and back to work," said Landry.
In addition to helping residents with their OMV debt, it helps people reacquire their licenses.
"Fees previously referred to the Office of Debt Recovery (ODR) for collection assistance were recalled and reset to the original amount," according to the OMV.

Residents should contact the OMV to pay off the original fee or enter an installment agreement. On Dec. 31, 2024, any fees that are still outstanding and over 180 days past due might be sent back to ODR as they will be considered delinquent debt, according to the OMV.
Officials said residents who want to enter into an installment agreement need their driver's license number, a valid email address and a debit card, credit card or ACH account to make the first month's payment.
"We are committed to serving Louisiana residents in a fair and impartial manner. If residents go to expresslane.org/ContactUs, we will contact them,” said OMV Commissioner Dan Casey. “The new law ensures that fees owed to OMV do not become an insurmountable obstacle and allows our agency to support drivers more effectively.”
