The Brown women’s basketball team fell short to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 62-55, on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. First-year guard Gia Powell continues to break her career bests, finishing Sunday’s game with 18 points, two rebounds, and four steals. First-year forward Aima Ofunrein continued her run scoring the second-most points in the game for the Bears at 15 points. Ofunrein grabbed 11 rebounds, and netted 83.3% of free-throws. “I thought we really executed our defensive game plan quite well. It was great to see, and we really emphasized rebounding the last couple of days in practice after a disappointing game against Holy Cross last week. It was a really great focus by the team,” Elizabeth F. Turner ’98 Coaching Chair for Women’s Basketball Monique LeBlanc said. “I think obviously we fouled too much, and the free throw discrepancy was too wide. We don’t want to give good teams free points at the free-throw line.” Lehigh opened up the contest with a seven point run, which was quickly shut down with a jumper from Gia Powell. The Bears hit back-to-back threes later in the quarter to cut Lehigh’s lead to five. Junior forward Beth Nelson netted a layup before the first quarter ended with Lehigh leading 22-15. The Mountain Hawks and Bears exchanged points in the second quarter, with the Bears nearing Lehigh ahead of the half. Junior guard Mackenzie Leahy and Gia Powell put on a show before the break at the half. Powell carried the ball up the court, sent the ball to Leahy who faked a shot to Powell who collected the two points. Powell also hit a buzzer beater, minimizing Lehigh’s lead 32-29. Brown came out of the break energized. Aima Ofunrein netted two free-throws before hitting a jumper. Junior guard Mady Calhoun netted a three-pointer halfway through the quarter giving the Bears the lead. Powell collected five points in the quarter. Junior guard Grace Arnolie wrapped up the quarter with a layup to give the Bears a 47-39 advantage over the Mountain Hawks. The Bears fouled seven times in the final quarter, allowing Lehigh to collect eight points on free-throws. The free-throws combined with layups allowed the Mountain Hawks to take control of the game in the final quarter, ultimately winning the game. UP NEXT The Bears will be back in action at home at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Tuesday, Nov. 19 against Johnson and Wales University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. BROWN UNIVERSITY SPORTS FOUNDATION The Brown University Sports Foundation (BUSF) is the lifeblood of the athletics program, and exists to enhance the student-athlete experience through philanthropic support from alumni, parents, fans and friends.
