WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- As we head into the winter season, you will notice a few new cold alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS) as well as some alerts that are under different names. Here is the breakdown. Last season we saw an extreme cold watch and a wind chill watch. Those two alerts have now been consolidated to be just an extreme cold watch. The NWS will issue this watch when dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are possible. So what does that mean for you when this is issued? Well, be prepared for cold conditions, if you have plans that day to be outside it is suggested to move plans indoors during the coldest part of the day. Extreme cold warnings and wind chill warnings are two alerts that we saw last winter season that will be changing this season. These alerts will now be consolidated into an extreme cold warning. When an extreme cold warning is issued in the DMV by the NWS, it means you should take action because dangerously cold air temperatures or cold wind chill values are occurring. It is recommended to avoid going outside in the warned areas. If you have to go outside, dress in layers and cover any exposed skin. It is also recommended that at least one other person knows your whereabouts and you update them once you get to your destination. The term wind advisory will no longer be used during the winter season. This alert has been renamed by the NWS as a cold weather advisory. When this is issued be aware of seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chill values.
