Man killed at apartment complex in downtown Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — A man was killed at an apartment complex in downtown Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.
During a media briefing, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers were called to an apartment building in the 500 block of East Market Street around 1 p.m. on a report of a person shot. When police arrived at the scene, they located a victim with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds on the third floor of the complex.
IMPD has confirmed that the victim — an adult male — was pronounced dead at scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office will release the name of the decedent once his family has been properly notified of his death. MCCO will also help IMPD determine the victim's exact manner and cause of death.
Police currently believe the incident was isolated and contained to a unit and hallway on the third floor of the apartment complex.
Law enforcement detained a female person of interest during their investigation. She has been transported to the IMPD Homicide Office for questioning.
Police have not yet confirmed what the alleged shooter's relationship with the victim was. IMPD did indicate, however, that the building the man was shot in was secure. The building is only accessible via key fobs given to its residents and employees.
IMPD is still investigating the shooting, and officers are asking citizens travelling in the area to avoid Market Street between North East Street and North College Avenue.
"Downtown still continues to be one of our safest districts," IMPD Public Information Officer William Young said during a media briefing. "As Chief (Chris) Bailey has stated before, every man and woman in our agency is geared toward reducing violent crime."
IMPD is asking those with information on the shooting to contact detective Christopher Edwards at (317) 327-3475 or [email protected]. Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana by calling (317) 262-8477, using the P3Tips mobile app or visiting www.CrimeTips.org.
As of this article's publication, no additional information on the shooting had been made available.
