Nov 17, 2024
More clouds have built in on this Sunday afternoon compared to the start of the weekend, but we’re rounding into the back half of November on a lovely note. The good times roll into the start of the workweek as highs cruise near 70º across the Piedmont and Foothills. Enjoy the warmth while it lasts – big changes arrive as we head into midweek. A powerful trough of low pressure originating from Canada will dig into the central U.S. as it pushes eastward, throwing rain chances into the Carolinas by Tuesday afternoon. Rain chances will linger into Wednesday, but it likely won’t amount to much. Temperatures will top out in the 50s and 60s for most through the second and third days of the workweek as clouds and isolated showers roll through our area. The bigger story will be the cold air crashing into the Carolinas behind this system. Strong northwesterly flow paired with energy and leftover moisture from the incoming  upper-level low will lead to significant snowfall in the High Country for the first time this season. Medium-range models have backed off on totals since yesterday, but elevations above 3500′ will likely see at least a few inches between Thursday night and Saturday morning. Lows will dip into the 20s and 30s across the board as many locations see their coldest air in nearly 250 days come Friday morning. The Charlotte area may also see its first freeze of the season around this timeframe. Outside of the mountains, the weekend is trending drier as highs slowly recover near 60º. Tonight: Variable clouds. Cool. Low: 44°. Wind: SW 5-10. Monday: Partly cloudy early, then mostly cloudy later. Warm. High: 71°. Wind: Light. Monday Night: Mostly cloudy. A bit milder. Low: 47°. Wind: Light. Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with a few showers later in the day. High: 66°. Wind: SW 5-10.
