A young person was killed and four others injured in a shooting late Friday at a party being held in an abandoned house in National City, police said.
Multiple 911 calls came in about 11:50 p.m. reporting shots fired at the property on N Avenue near 8th Street, according to police Capt. Derek Aydelotte.
National City police arrived to find more than 100 people at the party — mostly teens and young adults — and asked for assistance from neighboring police agencies for crowd control and to secure the scene, Aydelotte said. The shooter or shooters fled by the time law enforcement arrived, police said.
Police found five victims, all males. One, described as a young adult, died at the scene, and four others were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds, Aydelotte told OnScene.TV at the scene. One of the wounded victims was initially in critical condition, but all four were reported to be stable as of Saturday morning, Aydelotte said.
No one was in custody as of 7 a.m., and police were interviewing witnesses to identify suspects.
“We don’t know what led up to the shooting,” the captain said.
Police received at least one report of a party in the area earlier in the evening, but the call was still listed as pending before officers were dispatched to the shooting, Aydelotte said. The property is largely shielded from the street by a long driveway and a dirt embankment.
No further information was immediately available.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call police at 619-336-4411 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or sdcrimestoppers.org.
