A storm will bring widespread rain and mountain snow to New Mexico starting this weekend. Colder air will stick around through the middle of next week. A warmer and windier day across New Mexico Friday. Wind gusts have briefly been measured at over 50 mph in Gallup this afternoon. The wind has helped to bring in warmer weather though. Today's wind is a result of an approaching storm that will start bringing isolated showers into central and southern New Mexico by Saturday evening. Temperatures will stay mild across most of the state Saturday afternoon, with cooler air moving in western New Mexico. Rain will become scattered then widespread by Sunday morning as the low pressure system moves into the state. Snow will also fall for areas above 7,500 feet. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Sacramento Mountains and the Gila. Over 6" of snow is possible in these areas. Snow is also possible in western New Mexico, up to the East Mountains, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Meanwhile rain will fall as far north as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and Clayton. The heaviest rain will stay in the Rio Grande Valley and in eastern New Mexico. Areas in eastern New Mexico could even see over 1" of rain before the storm moves out by Monday afternoon. Temperatures will also be cooler as this storm moves in. Monday afternoon will be quieter and drier, but another low pressure system will clip northeast New Mexico on Tuesday. Unfortunately, this means we won't see much moisture out of it, but some spotty showers and higher elevation snow will be possible north of I-40. Winds will be gusty again Tuesday afternoon, especially along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and eastern New Mexico where 50 mph wind gusts will be possible. This low pressure system will also bring in even colder temperatures through next Wednesday. A warming trend will begin Thursday next week, with what looks like a warmer and drier weather pattern developing. Highs will be back above average again by the end of next week.
