Anthony Benvenuto, 54, of Enfield was allegedly driving while intoxicated on I-91 on Thursday, according to Connecticut State Police. A trooper was driving in the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane near Exit 33 in Hartford when passed by a Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Benvenuto. The truck picked up speed and moved erratically across lanes of traffic, almost hitting other vehicles.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop and Benvenuto appeared impaired. He failed a field sobriety test, his driver's license out of Maine was suspended, and could not prove that his truck was insured. He also informed the trooper that he didn't consume alcohol or drugs before he got into his truck.
Benvenuto was also been charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, reckless driving, failure to maintain proper lane-limited access highway, and illegal operation of a motor vehicle in violation of license classification.
This is the third time that Benvenuto has been charged with DUI and was held on a $25,000 bond. He was also charged with DUI on Sunday after troopers received reports of an erratic driver near Exit 33.
