FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A man was sentenced Friday in connection to the shooting of his brother-in-law during a family cookout earlier this year at a north Fort Wayne home.
A judge in Allen Superior Court handed 53-year-old Anthony Kidd nine years in prison for his role in an Aug. 3 shooting in a neighborhood off Coldwater and Cook roads.
The victim would later tell police there was a family gathering and everyone had been drinking alcohol, according to court documents in the case. Kidd allegedly insulted a family member, sparking an argument that quickly escalated into a shooting.
The victim was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition with a laceration to his liver, according to Allen Superior Court documents, and he was able to tell investigators it was his brother-in-law who shot him.

“I can’t believe he shot me,” the victim said in court documents. “I’ve known this man my entire life.”
Kidd had already driven away from the scene but was caught later that night during a traffic stop.
According to court documents, when police asked if he wanted to speak with a detective, Kidd said, “For what? Dude threatened me and I did what I did.”
He pleaded guilty in October to a Level 3 felony count of aggravated battery, and the agreement with prosecutors called for charges of criminal recklessness and felony use of a firearm to be dropped.
At Friday's sentencing, the judge gave Kidd credit for the 103 days he'd spent in jail as his case wound through the legal system.
