ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A new program gives consumers something to think about, whether its heating costs, renters' rights, or...food! It takes place twice a month on Thursdays in Rochester.
It's called "Thursday Thinkers," and this Thursday officials focused on accessing and preparing healthy foods - a timely topic as we head into the calorie laden holiday season.
Thursday, Foodlink nutrition educators were invited to share some important information about access to fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods in and around Rochester. Those who gathered at the Rochester Public Market from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. were treated to a citrus salad with simple ingredients: Romaine lettuce, red onion, an orange and dressing made with olive oil, apple cider vinegar and seasonings.
"Partnering with the Rochester Public Market, where we can do food demonstrations on Thursdays, is a great way to really let folks know that 'hey, you can come and learn how to cook through demonstrations.'"
The cooking "show and tell," organizers said, is just another opportunity to encourage these healthier food options.

"We ask folks what they are interested in, what they need help with, and we try to engage them and let them know about resources, services and good things going on in the community that they may not know about," said Jim Farr, director of the Rochester Public Market.
The series is an adult and family enrichment hosted by the city's Recreation and Human Services Department. Next week's topic: Cooking a healthy Thanksgiving Dinner. Same time, same place (Rochester Public Market, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) Participants can also enter to win ten dollars in Public Market Tokens. You can learn more here.
