It was from a sample taken November 7. Officials don't know the source and said test results aren't conclusive to know if it's H5N1. That's the variant known as the Avian Influenza Virus or "Bird Flu" that's been hitting other parts of the country. "Even if H5N1 is found in our state, the overall risk to the general public in Hawaii remains low," said Dr. Sarah Kemble, state epidemiologist. "As a person, or as any mammal, we're not at high risk of acquiring it because these are specific strains of flu viruses that affect birds mostly," said Dr. Axel Lehrer, UH Medical School's Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology & Pharmacology. Experts said those at the highest risk are farm workers. Moped rider dies in Waikiki collision Because it is a type of flu, symptoms are similar. "Symptoms of Avian Influenza may include fever, cough, sore throat, and conjunctivitis," said Kemble. "Anti-viral flu treatment is recommended as soon as possible." Health officials encourage the public to keep best practices. Such as not touching sick or dead birds without wearing protection like gloves and/or masks. Report any sick pets to your vet and contact state officials for any unusual or multiple animal illnesses. Even with all the feral chickens around, experts said your pets should also be safe. "If we have a good hunter at home that is able to catch one of those chickens and doesn't get killed in the process, it is very unlikely that a dog or cat would bring that virus home," said Lehrer. Wahiawa is one of 9 wastewater treatment facilities on the island and they are constantly being tested twice a week for viruses and bacteria. Those tests will continue to see if more positive results come in.
