APD: One dead after stabbing at southeast Austin homeless encampment

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- One man is dead after a stabbing that happened over the weekend at a homeless encampment in southeast Austin, the Austin Police Department said in a news release Thursday.
Around 6:31 p.m., Nov. 10, APD officers responded to a call in the 1900 block of East William Cannon Drive for a report of a man who "was lying on metal rods on the ground, and was bleeding from possible stab wounds," the release said.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the man, 39-year-old Elijah Martinez, on the ground "bleeding from a wound in his chest," according to police. Martinez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m.

The investigation revealed Martinez was stabbed in the homeless encampment that was next to the AutoZone, according to police. Multiple people left the area after the stabbing happened, the release said. No suspects have been identified, and police said no arrests have been made.

According to police, this was being investigated as Austin's 59th homicide.
