CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — Construction is rapidly advancing on a sizable affordable housing complex in Central Falls, which is part of a larger neighborhood transformation project.
Located at 44 Central St., the complex will house 25 of the 62 affordable units that Pawtucket Central Falls Development aims to open over the next two years.
The building will feature one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, along with two community commercial spaces, according to the developers.
Although the organization has developed more than 250 affordable housing units thus far, Pawtucket Central Falls Development Executive Director Linda Weisinger highlighted a broader vision for the project.
"Community revitalization is our focus. It's not just one-and-done," Weisinger said. "It's transforming this entire block, and we've been successful by acquiring properties at both ends and in the middle of the block."
Rhode Island House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi praised the development as a positive step for the state.
"I think things are getting better in Rhode Island. You're seeing more building permits being issued," Shekarchi said. "Now, I know a building permit is not a unit, but building permits are up significantly."
For those interested, applications for rental units are now available online.
