MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grand jury is set to hear the case of the man accused of shooting a beloved Collierville doctor to death in 2023. A judge found enough probable cause to send the murder case against Larry Pickens to the grand jury Thursday.  Pickens will remain in jail on $1.2 million bond. Pickens is charged with the July 2023 shooting death of Dr. Benjamin Mauck, an orthopedic surgeon at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar.    Surgeon fatally shot by patient at Tennessee clinic: police The shooting happened in an exam room at Campbell Clinic where Mauck was treating Pickens. He was shot three times, reports state. The motive is unclear. Mauck, who was praised by colleagues as a gifted surgeon, was named a “Top Doctor” last year and featured in the June 2023 issue of Memphis magazine. Accused Collierville clinic shooter had previous attempted murder charge; purchased gun days before shooting Germantown Police released records showing that Pickens had been barred from a different location of Campbell Clinic because of unusual behavior just a few days prior to the Collierville shooting. Pickens had called Memphis Police several times over the years, in one case telling officers that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had been off his medication.
