TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has more Highway 24 construction projects on the agenda for Topeka. The first of two bridge projects will be the bridges over Northwest Goodyear Road. Once that's done, they'll tackle the Stover road bridges that allow travel over Highway 24. Steve Baalman is the KDOT engineer responsible for the Topeka metropolitan area. He told 27 News the bridges are old and maintenance has become too expensive. He said replacing the bridges is the best option. The highway will remain open in both directions during construction, but will be reduced to one lane at times. Anxiety, screen time and the classroom: mental health expert weighs in Baalman said local travelers will feel the biggest impact. "It will have an impact on the local traffic that uses Goodyear road, including Goodyear itself," he said, "'cause while we're doing the bridge replacements, Goodyear road right underneath the bridges will be closed." Construction could begin as early as Fall 2025. Baalman said KDOT will have detour routes planned before they start. The public was invited to an open house in Topeka Wednesday night to learn about the projects and give feedback. KDOT is still accepting comments and questions through Wednesday, Nov. 27.
