Providence Public Schools confirms student data impacted in cyberattack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Nearly 900 current and former Providence Public School District students had personal information "potentially exposed" in a hack detected in mid-September.
District spokesperson Jay G. Wegimont said this includes information like immunizations or driver’s license numbers, and that each impacted student would be contacted individually by mail this week and next.
The school community was updated in a letter on Nov. 8, which said an investigation revealed that the district identified files that contain student roster information for all students. (The files contain information like student names, grades, schools, program types and home addresses.)

"We have also identified files containing some students’ special education status, including some documents regarding students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or meeting notes," Wegimont said.
The investigation did conclude, however, that the district's cloud-based student information system was not compromised.
Last month, the district said the hack may have also impacted 12,000 current and former employees.
"We again apologize for the concern that this matter has caused for our families and staff," the letter from the district said. "Please know that the protection of your personal information and the safety of our students and staff remain our toppriorities."
Wegimont said amid an ongoing court battle over additional school funding, the district was "providing services as required and those decisions are separate from the budget situation."
"PPSD is reviewing our overall budget to determine areas where we can offset this unexpected cost," Wegimont said. "The expense were not initially part of the budget."
